Simplified printing coming to the Coast Guard

By Kathy Murray, MyCG Writer

Printing at the Coast Guard is about to get easier, thanks to a new application the C5I Service Center is rolling out enterprise wide.

PrinterLogic will make it easier to find a printer no matter where you’re located and get your print jobs completed faster than ever.

“As long as you have your workstation and are connected to our network (on premise, VPN, or VDI), you should be able to print from anywhere in the Coast Guard,” says Chief Warrant Officer Pedro Sullivan, who works for the C5ISC. Sullivan notes that a simplified interface will allow you to quickly add a new printer. “You’ll no longer have to find someone in the office to ask what the cryptic name of a printer is.”

PrinterLogic has already been rolled out in Alexandria, Virginia offices and all of District 5. It is expected to be deployed across the Coast Guard by mid-September.

Here’s what else you need to know:

Why a new printer app?

In addition to making printing easier, PrinterLogic will reduce the burden on existing servers and facilitate the service’s continued migration to SharePoint. Currently, Coast Guard headquarters, for example, runs four servers just for printing. Eliminating the need for these servers will reduce electricity costs, and save a lot of money, says Sullivan.

“It is one of the steps we can take that is going to make things better for everyone,” he said.

How does it work?

Once deployed, the PrinterLogic icon Print icon button graphic, which is a printer with a green plus sign, will show up in the system tray of your work computer. By clicking on it, you can choose the location where you’d like to print and then find the printer you want to use, either by name or using a locator map that will show all printers in the office.

All you need to do is select the printer. It will be quickly added to your system and you can print what you need within minutes.

Will PrinterLogic be used on cutters?

Not at this time, PrinterLogic will only be installed shoreside. C5ISC continues to evaluate printer improvements on cutters.

What do I need to do?

That’s the good news. Nothing. Your Base C5I Department will notify you when you are to be migrated. Once the migration is complete, there is nothing you have to do other than add any new printers you need!

If you already have printers installed on your workstation, those will be automatically converted to the PrinterLogic system with no other actions needed.
