Jessica Cross, a research oceanographer with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, shows the course of an unmanned wind-propelled and solar-powered surface vehicle Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017, from a computer on the bridge of the Coast Guard Cutter Healy as the crew transits the southern Chukchi Sea.

This is one of two sailing drones Cross is in charge of, and while aboard the Healy, she and the crew rendezvoused with both vehicles so that Cross could calibrate specific instrumentation by comparing location data samples with what the sensors aboard the vehicles were reading.
