Don’t miss the opportunity! The 2024 Inspirational Leadership Awards are accepting nominations

By MyCG Team

Commands, do you know someone who:

  • Fosters a culture of diversity through inclusion and commitment.
  • Inspires through mentorship of both junior and senior personnel.
  • Leads and motivates by example encouraging others to perform at their highest potential.

If you have an upstanding leader in mind, then don’t miss the opportunity to nominate them for a 2024 Coast Guard Inspirational Leadership Award (ILA) or Navy League Leadership Award! Commands are encouraged to submit as many nominees as they would like to ensure a competitive process and a pool of submissions that are reflective of the Coast Guard workforce. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024.

The ILA’s and Navy League Leadership Awards recognize individuals who demonstrate outstanding leadership, foster a culture of diversity, mentor personnel, and lead and motivate by example while exemplifying the Coast Guard’s core values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty during the 2023 calendar year. Coast Guard active duty and reserve officers, enlisted members, civilian employees and auxiliarists are eligible for the awards.

“I was honored and humbled when leaders that I respected and admired chose to nominate me for an Inspirational Leadership Award,” said Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard Heath B. Jones, winner of the MCPO Angela M. McShan Inspirational Leadership Award and Douglas A. Munro Leadership Award. “Celebrating our Sentinels who not only exemplify our Core Values, but also empower and inspire those around them is an opportunity to recognize their contributions in a meaningful way. We should all strive to show appreciation for their commitment and take the time to formally express our thanks for their efforts.”

Top Reasons to Submit a Nomination

Recognizing high performers is a tangible way to show your gratitude and appreciation for an individual’s hard work and support the Coast Guard’s retention and recruitment efforts.

“It’s imperative for those observing inspirational leadership to nominate those responsible,” said Cmdr. Tom Crowley, previous panel president. “Submitting a nomination package on behalf of someone in your command not only honors and reinforces their outstanding service, but it also tells their story and extends their incredible positive influence. Relaying the stories of those exemplary leaders in our midst reminds all of us of what is possible and calls us to fulfill our true potential as servicemembers and leaders.”

Potential career advancement

  • The enlisted winner of the Douglas A Munro Inspirational Leadership Award receives an automatic merit advancement.
  • Being nominated is a significant accomplishment that can have a powerful impact on someone’s career.
  • The extra recognition could make a difference in a job assignment or promotion.
  • Being nominated can be documented in other forms such as a positive CG Form 3307, a personnel award, on one’s OER or EER or with a citation.
  • Navy League Leadership Award winners receive an award competency code in Direct Access.

Influencing future leaders

“These awards are not just for the advancements or recognition,” said Chief Petty Officer Andrew Champagne, winner of the enlisted 2023 Douglas A. Munro Inspirational Leadership Award. “It’s to continue to tell the story of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. These stories are our history and need to continue to be told to the next generation of Coast Guard leaders. As these stories get told of ordinary people doing extraordinary things, it will spark ideas, new interest, and confidence in that next generation. I see my story has inspired the people around me. I see junior members striving to make change and seek new ways of doing things. Pride in senior leadership, that the culture they have a part in, fosters good mentors and confidence in them to make good decisions.  An inspirational leader uplifts the team and the people around them.”
