TRICARE/Health Insurance

TRICARE is the health care program for active duty and reserve Coast Guard service members, retirees, and their families.

Visit the TRICARE Website to learn more about all the TRICARE health plans, find a doctor, or to learn about costs.

The Defense Health Agency (DHA) and TRICARE maintain educational materials for active duty and reserve Coast Guard service members, retirees, and their families. Information regarding benefits coverage, costs, and important life events including Permanent Change of Station (PCS), retirement, childbirth, and many eligibility concerns can be found on the TRICARE publications and MHS websites.

Use Express Scripts to sign-up for your medication deliveries and refills of your medicine subscriptions, or manage their maintenance.

The U.S. Family Health Plan (USFHP) is available in select markets in the US. It is an option for families that allows eligible beneficiaries to enroll for services through participating non-profit health plans in specific regions.

Dental and Vision

The TRICARE dental program is offered through United Concordia. Family members and reservists not on active duty are also eligible to enroll.

Family members and retirees may enroll in a vision plan through FEDVIP

Voluntary, dental and vision programs are available to certain retired uniformed service members and active duty family members. Additional information can be found on the BENEFEDS Education Support website. 

Health Claims Support

The Health, Safety and Work-Life Service Center (HSWL SC) Benefits Counseling and Assistance Coordinators (BCACs) manage the Health Benefits Advice Program, supporting Health Benefits Advisors (HBAs) at Coast Guard clinics and sickbays, and operating the HBA call center and email for USCG active duty, reserve, retired, and family members. Mental Health

The Coast Guard’s Employee Assistance Program offers free confidential support to active duty military (including Coast Guard Academy and Training Center Enlisted Recruits) SELRES, civilian employees, U.S. Public Health Service Coast Guard assigned officers, U.S. Navy Chaplains assigned to the Coast Guard, non-appropriated fund employees, and family members and dependents. Resources include counseling for stress, anxiety, marriage and parenting issues, depression and other mental health care needs, in addition to personal fitness coaching and financial management coaching.

Special Needs

TRICARE ECHO This program offers benefits that include training, respite care, home care, technology devices and more, and includes retired service members and their families. Some of the services may be cost-shared under ECHO or your TRICARE program—it will be determined by your qualifying condition.

Autism Care Resources This TRICARE program provides resources available on autism diagnosis, treatment plans, and support.

Health Safety & Work-Life Sea Legs Consolidated Health Resources Sea Legs is an online resource that includes information relevant to retirees like healthcare coverage and other benefits. This is also a great resource for active duty dependents.

Health Safety & Work-Life Sea Legs Transition Resources Tragedy Assistance Program website, TAPS, provides comfort, care and resources to all those grieving the death of a military loved one. The website provides services for grief counseling, and the ability to connect with others who are also grieving the loss of a military loved-one.

Fisher House This foundation provides comfortable lodging, free-of-charge, that military and veteran families can stay in while their loved one is in the hospital. They also offer a variety of other programs to support the military community.

Coast Guard Foundation If a Coast Guard member becomes critically ill, injured or has fallen in the line of duty, the Fallen Heroes Fund is able to provide some financial support to family members during their difficult time.

Personal Crisis

Coast Guard Foundation Tragedy Assistance The foundation’s programs assists families, financially or otherwise, during times of tragedy and disaster. The Coast Guard Foundation is committed to ensuring all Coast Guard members and families have the resources they need to build resilience throughout their lives.

Veteran's Crisis Line Staffed by caring, qualified responders many of whom are veterans themselves. They understand specific challenges that military members, their dependents, and their loved ones experience in the line of serving their country.

Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors TAPS  A resource that offers compassionate care to all those grieving the loss of a military loved one
