Best Places to Work: Surface Forces Logistics Center (SFLC)

What we do:
The Surface Forces Logistics Center (SFLC) has primary hubs in Baltimore, Maryland, Norfolk, Virginia and Alameda, California.  But wait, that’s not it….SFLC, nearly 1,800 strong, also has members in the 24 following locations:  Atlantic Beach, Boston, Cape Canaveral, Charleston, Cheboygan, Cleveland, Detroit, Honolulu, Ketchikan, Houston, Key West, Kodiak, Miami, New Orleans, Portsmouth, North Bend, St. Louis, San Diego, Puerto Rico, Guam, Seattle, St. Augustine, St. Petersburg, and Yorktown.
SFLC exists to support the fleet by providing depot-level maintenance, engineering, supply, information services, and Cybersecurity to support Coast Guard mission execution, 24x7 worldwide.

Why it's fulfilling:
Our motto – “SFLC exists to support the fleet” is taken seriously by all SFLC members, and while we do not execute the missions of the Coast Guard our nexus to those missions from a support perspective make SFLC a fulfilling place to work!

Why you should work here:
The SFLC is a diverse workplace consisting of military, civilian and contractor employees all of whom serve a pivotal role in laying the groundwork eagerly providing support to our operational customers and stakeholders. We receive vital training and education that not only prepares us for our role in assisting the men and women protecting our homeland but it also challenges us as individuals and directly encourages professional career development and upward mobility. SFLC promotes a “team” environment that leverages exceptional long term working relationships and boosts workplace morale while also leaving you with a feeling of unity and purpose.

What we do for fun:
The SFLC Morale Committee plans and hosts a myriad of fun activities to keep our “Semper Paratus” spirit going strong. We work hard and play hard! There are the spring and fall picnics, bowling events, baseball games, sports competitions between products lines and shared services divisions, giveaways and our big holiday parties. There is always something for everyone to look forward to and we are never hesitant in finding opportunities for down time, comradery, and truly embracing those moments.  Outside of work, our locales offer endless activities and opportunities from beaches to lakes to mountains, there is a healthy nightlife with great restaurants and entertainment galore.

Best-kept secret:
Some would argue that the best-kept secret of the SFLC is our three hours of administrative leave for health and wellness a week or the $5 galley lunches, however, the best-kept secret is truly the exceptional people of the SFLC. At any given moment, you can reach out to a colleague from across the country to get the answer you need in efforts collaboratively providing the feedback and service needed to complete a task or mission. Not only does it further your professional relationships but it also fosters new relationships. Working collectively as a team with professionals all over the globe, with one mission in mind, “Service to the Fleet”.
