Coast Guard’s Office of Safety and Environmental Health recently presented the crew from Coast Guard Cutter Resolute with the 2021 Excellence in Afloat Safety Award

By Lt. Cmdr. Tyson Richards, Cutter Safety manager

During 152 days away from homeport including multiple patrols in the Caribbean Sea, the Coast Guard Cutter Resolute crew prudently applied Safety Management System (SMS) principles to maximize mission effectiveness in support of the following efforts: Operation Unified Resolve, Operation Southeast Watch, Operation Caribbean Guard, Enhanced Counter narcotics Operations, Campaign Martillo, and the Caribbean Corridor Strike Force.

Throughout the year, the crew deeply analyzed internal processes, implemented timely interventions and continually addressed blind-spots including effecting improvements to the Cutter Organization Manual, Respiratory and Fire Marshall Instructions, the OMSEP protocol, and the Unit Mishap Response instruction—all culminating in a successful full-scale Class A mishap response drill and Permanent Mishap Board exercise.

The crew of the Resolute implemented sound risk management practices to complete multiple large engineering contracts such as reverse osmosis and main diesel engine overhauls. Notably the crew missed zero operational days during multiple deployments despite exposure to hundreds of migrants, SAR survivors, and detainees in the operational environment. All completed during the challenging days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, Cutter Resolute members completed dozens of underway hours in support of testing and evaluation efforts for a prototype cutter boat-large (CB-L), submitting valuable recommendations to the Coast Guard’s assistant Commandant of Capabilities to address safety hazards with a safety rail placement and lifting strap design.

Congratulations to the other 2021 Excellence in Safety Award winners;

  • Ashore: Marine Security Response Team (MSRT) West;
  • Aviation Capt. Marion Gus Shrode award: Air Station Clearwater.
