We want to award you for your photos, videos, stories and public affairs campaigns!

By CWO2 Lauren Jorgensen, public affairs program manager

We know you’ve taken plenty of amazing photos and videos of Coast Guard people, missions and assets this year. Or perhaps you wrote an article for MyCG. Maybe your unit runs an impressive public affairs program. Have you considered that your photos, videos, stories or public affairs efforts could earn you or your unit awards?

Well, they can!

It’s that time of year again for the annual Coast Guard Public Affairs Awards, and nearly every member of the Coast Guard is eligible to compete and win awards. The Chief Journalist Alex Haley photo, video, and writing competition has eight award categories and is open to Coast Guard active duty enlisted and officers, reserve, civilian, and auxiliary members. The CDR Jim Simpson Public Affairs Award for unit public affairs programs is open to every unit in the service.

Last year there were 22 entries for the CDR Jim Simpson Award, excluding public affairs offices, and 40 entries for the Haley Awards, excluding public affairs specialists.

Consider entering yourself or your unit this year and help us double those numbers!

You’ve got some time for the Simpson Award, but if you want to compete for a Haley Award and your products are not yet on DVIDS, the Coast Guard’s official imagery database, you need to act fast.

The Haley Award submission deadline is not until Feb. 16, 2024, but to enter this year’s competition, your photos, videos, and writing must first be published on DVIDS no later than Dec. 31, 2023. This means you’ll need to coordinate with your servicing public affairs office before Dec. 31 so they can help you publish your content. Not sure how to reach them? This site provides links to each office’s contact information.

We’ve made some changes to the guidelines and processes for both awards this year, so make sure you visit the Public Affairs Awards SharePoint site for all the official information and deadlines.

We look forward to seeing your submissions and wish you luck in the competition!
