Servicewide Exams (SWE) rescheduled for Aug. 26 -29, 2024

By Kathy Murray, MyCG Senior Writer

The Coast Guard has rescheduled the Servicewide Exam for Aug. 26 - 29, 2024.

The announcement comes a week after this year’s SWE exams were canceled due to printing errors in the test packets. Ratings knowledge managers are currently writing the new tests, which will be delivered to the Personnel Service Center (PSC) by June 1.

In choosing new dates, Rear Adm. Russell Dash, commander, PSC, said the service tried to strike a balance. They didn’t want to do the tests too soon when many members will be making Permanent Change of Station (PCS) moves. But they didn’t want to wait too long and have it cause further delays to advancements and the 2025 assignment season.

The rescheduled SWE’s will also start on a Monday, rather than the normal Tuesday, so testing can be completed before the Labor Day weekend.

In addition, Dash says, the Coast Guard will be more flexible than normal in scheduling make-up exams for members since no one was planning for an August SWE. “We recognize that some folks may have scheduled vacations, honeymoons, or have other obligations for this period,” he said. “We want to do our best to accommodate that.”

The annual SWE is a necessary step for advancement from E-5 to E-8 for most Cost Guard ratings, along with command input, qualifications, and other factors. Rescheduling the test will push back publication of the enlisted Advancement Eligibility list and first round advancement cut-offs for Assignment Year 2025 (AY25). The PSC is working to update those milestones and will share this information as soon as it is available.
