Military members: Check your inbox for an important Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) survey

By Kathy Murray, Senior Writer, MyCG

If you’re a military member who recently received an email invitation to take a Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) survey, don’t hit delete.

The Department of Defense (DoD) is doing a major study on the BAH and how well it helps members address their housing needs.

The BAH Adequacy Survey, administered by the Center for Naval Analyses (CNA), will assess the extent to which BAH covers actual housing costs, as well as how actual military housing choices (housing type, number of bedrooms, etc.) differ from DoD’s BAH adequacy criteria.

About a fifth of all U.S. service members have been randomly selected to participate and will receive an email including a Qualtrics link to the BAH Adequacy Survey.  Recruitment began on April 21 and will continue through June 2. So even if you haven’t received an invitation yet, one could still be coming. If you’re chosen to be part of the study, you’ll also receive reminder emails during the recruitment period.

The survey takes about 20 minutes to complete and is completely confidential. Participation is voluntary but highly encouraged. This is your opportunity to share your housing experiences and preferences to ensure the DoD gets an accurate picture of servicemembers’ housing choices and needs.

The DoD study is sponsored by OUSD P&R (Manpower and Reserve Affairs/Compensation) and scheduled to be completed by November 2025.
