Rescue, Ready, Repeat: Honoring our SAR heroes

By Office of Search and Rescue (SAR), U.S. SARSAT Program

National SAR Week (May 18-24) is when we take a moment to recognize the unwavering dedication and vital contributions of the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and its SAR partners to the national and global SAR communities. This week highlights the critical role we all play in saving lives across land, air, and sea.

“This National SAR Week, we celebrate everyone who makes these missions possible,” said Capt. Todd M. Behney, Chief of the Office of Search and Rescue. “From the watchful eye of watchstanders analyzing data and formulating search plans, to the courageous aircrews, boatcrews, and cutter crews braving perilous conditions, to the dedicated engineers, oceanographers, and technicians who maintain our life-saving systems – what you do is critical to safety and survival of those in need.”

The USCG stands as a world leader in life-saving efforts thanks to the expertise and commitment from its personnel. From Rescue Coordination Centers to rescue swimmers and cutter crews, every member contributes to this critical mission.

Strategic support provided byCoast Guard Assistant Commandants for Response Policy (CG-5R) and Coast Guard Capabilities (CG-7) - from policy development to operational readiness - is also instrumental to success. The National SAR School also ensures the next generation of SAR professionals are well-equipped for the challenges ahead. Our air stations, boat stations and rescue swimmers are often first responders in high-risk situations, extending our reach across vast and demanding maritime environments with the support of our cutter crews.

The USCG’s success is amplified through collaboration. “Each rescue underscores the heroism of the SAR community,” said Behney. Partners like the Air Force, Space Force, NASA, NOAA, and the International Cospas-Sarsat Programme strengthen our collective ability to respond effectively and save lives.

Behney summed it up: “Alongside our partners,we execute hundreds of SAR missions every day, saving thousands of lives each year and returning those family members safely to loved ones.”

To all Sentinels and our valued partners, thank you for your unwavering service, courage, and commitment. Your lifesaving work is an inspiration. Stay safe, stay prepared, and continue your excellent work!
