Best places to work: Base Los Angeles-Long Beach

By Petty Officer 3rd Class Richard Uranga

Why it's great
We got a dog! We are the first Coast Guard base to have an official facility dog. His name is Winston!

Why it's a great place to live
There is nothing you can't find in Southern California. We have 11 professional league sports teams in L.A.  We have close-knit neighborhoods. We are known for surfing at the beach, skiing in the mountains, and great desert resorts and recreational areas. And of course, it’s a very dog-friendly place! Did we mention our base dog?

What we do
This Base, along with Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach (LA-LB), Station LA-LB, Maritime Safety and Security Team (MSST) LA-LB, handles a wide range of missions. We are at the fourth longest port in the world. From vessel inspections and Aids-to-Navigation (ATON) to law enforcement and search and rescue (SAR) and beyond, we are meeting every Coast Guard mission here! Every person at this unit contributes to saving lives, preventing casualties, and responding to emergencies.

Why it's fulfilling
The camaraderie across each department and unit drives our success; our tight-knit team feels rewarded every time we complete a mission. It helps to have the best galley meals, too!

Why it's great to live here
Though we are in San Pedro, LA-LB is between the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports and has much to offer culturally and geographically. We have the best weather, a wide range of cuisines and culture, and we are close to the entertainment capital of the world.

What we do for fun
Everyone can find anything here. There is an active Chief Petty Officers Association and Coast Guard Enlisted Association, which sponsor various morale events, such as movies, games, and socials. Base LA-LB is centrally located between Los Angeles and Orange County beaches, with plenty of surf, sun, and sand to go around. There is no excuse for boredom.

Best-kept secret
The Reservation Point on base is scenic. It’s the perfect venue for ceremonies, with a world-class galley crew to cater the event. There is also a full-service Exchange and new recreation fields with sports equipment. The morale group on Base connects with Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach for football, soccer, and other team sports.
