Best places to work: HITRON Jacksonville, Fla.

By Lt. Jessica S. Wright, HITRON Mission Commander

What we do

Coast Guard Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron (HITRON) Jacksonville, Fla. is a specialized aviation unit whose primary mission is combating drug trafficking operations at sea. HITRON’s highly skilled personnel push the MH-65 to its limits while taking on the critical task of intercepting and stopping illicit drug shipments before they can reach our shores.

HITRON trains and deploys highly specialized Aviation Detachments (AVDETs) to Coast Guard cutters and Allied ships, enabling the effective use of Airborne Use of Force. During deployments, AVDETs face complex, high-pressure situations that demand quick thinking, precision, and seamless teamwork. Their efforts result typically yield millions of dollars in seized contraband, safeguarding Americans and neighboring nations.

Why it’s fulfilling

HITRON averages over $1 billion in cocaine interdicted every year – over one-third of all narcotics interdicted by the entire Coast Guard. No other entity in the U.S. government does more to stop the flow of illicit narcotics into the U.S. than HITRON, ensuring national security and regional stability.

While the results of our highly skilled teams speak for themselves, it’s the unparalleled camaraderie at HITRON that truly sets us apart. Whether within the unit or among deployed Aviation Detachments, lifelong bonds are forged through shared mission and mutual trust. We train alongside some of the most seasoned aviators and aircrew in the Armed Forces, all within an environment that fosters collaboration, continuous learning, and professional growth.

When not on watch, we

HITRON does not have a Search and Rescue duty requirement, so when we are not deployed or on the flight schedule our time is our own!

Why it’s great to live here

Living in Jacksonville, Fla. means you’re never far from family – friendly beaches and a wide range of attractions. From professional sports and amusement parks to museums and zoos, there’s something for everyone. The city’s vibrant downtown, historic St. Augustine, and nearby towns offer and abundance of nightlife options, ensuring there’s always something to enjoy after the sun sets. Plus, with easy access to Jacksonville International Airport, traveling to visit family or explore new destinations is quick and convenient. Whether you’re exploring outdoor activities or diving into the local culture, Jacksonville provides the perfect balance of relaxation, excitement, and convenience for all ages.

What we do for fun

When our crews are deployed not flying missions, AVDETs get to experience some truly unforgettable adventures. Attached to Coast Guard cutters, we enjoy port calls all over the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific. We visit ports like Panama, Costa Rica, the Dutch Caribbean islands, and Columbia. Some crews even get to transit the Panama Canal. It’s one of the best parts of the job – getting to doing meaningful work while getting to see different parts of the world and making some great memories along the way!

Best-kept secret

While home, we do not stand any overnight flight duty, which means we are home every night and have weekends off when not deployed. As a Coast Guard Aviators, this gives us more consistent family time than at nearly any other unit.

Beyond work-life balance, HITRON offers exceptional opportunities for professional growth. Our members gain extensive experience in leadership, advanced aviation tactics, and mission sets that go far beyond traditional search and rescue. This well-rounded expertise sets us apart from our peers and opens the door for outstanding follow-on assignments.
