Coast Guard uniform blue windbreaker and dress pants in short supply

By Jay Main, Logistic Specialist CG-441

The Coast Guard is experiencing uniform shortages of both the blue windbreaker and dress pants due to supply chain issues.

The windbreaker, which was subject to shortages last year, has become so hard to get that the Coast Guard has temporarily stopped issuing it to new recruits. For the dress pants, both the dry-clean and wash/wear versions are affected.

Right now, the expectation is that we won't see a return to normal uniform stock levels until late 2026.

Why is this happening?

The main reason is that the U.S. textile manufacturers who make our uniforms are struggling to keep up with the increased demand across all branches of the military. The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), which handles uniform procurement for the Department of Defense, is working with us and other services to address the issue.

How does this impact you?

  • Recruits and Cadets: At Recruit Training Center (RTC) Cape May and the Coast Guard Academy, uniform stock levels are critically low. In addition to the current suspension of issuing windbreakers, there might be some reductions in initial issues of dress pants, shirts, and ODUs. No worries, though: recruits will receive a stipend to purchase any missing items upon graduation. The Coast Guard Academy is experiencing similar gaps.
  • Fleet Members: The Coast Guard Exchange (CGX) is also feeling the pinch. So active duty and reserve personnel may experience delays or difficulty finding certain uniform items.

What the Coast Guard is doing

We're actively working with DLA to minimize the impact on our personnel. Here's what we're doing:

  • Prioritizing new accessions to make sure recruits and cadets at RTC Cape May and the Academy get what they need first.
  • Working with DLA and manufacturers to push for faster production and delivery of uniform items.
  • Keeping an eye on the supply chain and exploring all available options to improve uniform availability.
  • Improving the CGX ordering systems and website to give you better visibility on uniform availability and help manage your orders.

What this means for your command

Keep in mind that new personnel arriving at your unit may be missing certain uniform items due to these supply chain issues. Please be understanding and provide support as they work to acquire the necessary items.

We appreciate your patience as we navigate these challenges. We'll continue to provide updates as the situation evolves.
