Are you in the ME, MST, AET, or SK rating and eligible for the Reserve SWE this October? The Electronic Servicewide Exam (eSWE) is HERE! Dive into the details below and start preparing now with the practice exams in CG-OWL!
The eSWE journey began with a successful test run in May 2025 with the active-duty ME and MST ratings, proving that a digital SWE is a viable option. This October's Reserve eSWE is an exciting expansion of that beta program. The Coast Guard is building on lessons learned and strategically implementing the eSWE where it makes the most sense. Remember, while we're talking about an exciting new process, the traditional paper-based SWE remains the primary method for most ratings and paygrades.
ReSWE
If you're an ME, MST, AET, or SK Reservist and eligible for the SWE in October 2025, you'll take the ReSWE on October 25th. So, step one: bookmark the eSWE page. Step two: keep reading. Step three: make an appointment with your ESO or SWE Administrative Officer.
Here are the main changes:
- Shorter Exam: Instead of 150 questions, you'll face 75 carefully crafted questions.
- Less Time: You'll have 90 minutes to crush it, compared to the old 3.5-hour format.
- CG-OWL Platform: The eSWE will be delivered through the Coast Guard Online World of Learning (CG-OWL).
This means a more focused testing experience, increased flexibility, and a streamlined path to advancement. Exciting, right?
Practice Makes Perfect!
Want to get a feel for the eSWE before the real deal? You're in luck! There are TWO practice exams waiting for you in CG-OWL. After logging in, go to ‘Course Catalog’ under the ‘Courses’ dropdown bar. ‘Electronic Servicewide Exam’ is at the bottom of page two of the course catalog.

- Practice eSWE for monitors: If you're a monitor, this lets you test your credentials and the monitoring tools.
Pro-Tip: Dive into these practice exams ASAP. Familiarize yourself with the system. It'll ease your nerves and boost your confidence.

ESOs and Commands: Let's Make the ReSWE a Success!
This is a team effort. Here's how you can help ensure a smooth eSWE experience:
- Schedule Flexibility: Use the flexibility the eSWE offers. Work with your members to find times that work best for them and the unit.
- Secure Workstations: Make sure everyone has access to a functioning Coast Guard workstation during their scheduled exam time. Coordinate with other units if needed.
- October 2025 ReSWE Officer Handbook: This handbook is your go-to.
- Proctoring Ratios: One eSWE Proctor is required for every five candidates, and one SWE Officer can oversee up to ten candidates. (Note: check out the Handbook above for more on eSWE Proctors and SWE Officers.)
- Secure Testing Environment: No unauthorized materials! Collect and destroy all scratch paper, etc., after the exam. Power down extra monitors (each test-taker is permitted only one monitor).
- eSWAT to the Rescue: If you run into any snags, reach out to eSWAT@uscg.mil for support.
The eSWE represents an exciting evolution in our SWE process. For those participating in this October's Reserve eSWE, proper preparation and collaboration will be key to success. Get ready to embrace the future of testing! And for everyone else, the solid, reliable paper-based SWE remains the standard.
