Coast Guard takes on Merchant Mariners in Secretaries’ Cup this Saturday

By Kathy Murray, Senior Writer, MyCG

When the 2025 Secretaries’ Cup kicks off at Fenway Park this Saturday (Nov. 15), it will be the first time the annual matchup between the Coast Guard Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy has ever been played off campus.

The major league stadium setting elevates this football rivalry – often referred to as the small college Army/Navy game – to a national stage. And hosting it in Boston, the heart of New England and the birthplace of the Coast Guard, underscores the Service's deep roots in the region.

The event, which dates to 1949,  was originally known as the Secretary’s Cup since both service branches were part of the Department of Transportation. The Bears prevailed 21-14 in that first game. The rivalry was christened the “Secretaries’ Cup” in 2003 after the Coast Guard moved to Homeland Security. Since then, the Mariners have held a commanding lead in the series.

Last year, however, the Coast Guard ended a losing streak against its rival, a win that gives the Bears momentum heading into this game.

What to watch: Coast Guard’s firepower

The Bears arrive with one of their strongest squads in recent memory. After snapping their drought with a win last season, they are riding high and undefeated heading into the Cup. The offense is anchored by a standout running back, Broock Desta, a senior whose explosiveness has become a focal point of their game-plan. The line is deep, the receiving corps sturdy, and the defense experienced – expect the Bears to come in with confidence and swagger.

Can the Mariners respond?

The Mariners won’t go down without a fight. Despite losing last year’s contest, they carry weight of tradition and the hunger of a program determined to reclaim its dominance. Their roster is also infused with under-the-radar talent. Expect them to try to impose their will early, control the tempo, and keep the Bears’ running game in check.

A venue shift

Playing at a major stadium like Fenway for the first time adds an extra dimension. Fans will be treated to a morning Fan Fest (9–11 a.m. before kickoff) on Fenway’s outfield, lawn games, photo-ops, and giveaways. You can find more details here

Tickets still available

It’s also not too late to get tickets. So, if you want to come out and root for the Bears to complete a perfect season, don’t miss this opportunity. The game is scheduled for 12 pm and you can purchase tickets here. It will also be broadcast on ESPN+.

The Secretaries’ Cup is deeply ingrained in our service culture.  More than just football, it’s about esprit de corps, camaraderie, and loyalty. It’s also likely that there will be Coast Guard announcements at the event, so stay tuned.
