As the federal government reopens after the longest shutdown in U.S. history, Coast Guard Mutual Assistance (CGMA) extends our sincere appreciation to the Coast Guard civilian workforce. Over the last 43 days, you faced uncertainty, missed paychecks, and real financial stress — and yet the Coast Guard community stood strong together.
Throughout the shutdown, CGMA remained fully operational and ready to help. Because of the dedication of our representatives and the generosity of the broader Coast Guard family, we were able to deliver meaningful financial support when it mattered most.
During this shutdown, CGMA provided:
- $2.3 million in assistance
- Support to 771 civilian employees
- An average request of $3,034
Each number represents more than an interest-free loan, it reflects a Coast Guard family who didn’t have to face hardship alone. Active Duty and Reserve members who continued to receive pay donated to support their civilian coworkers. Retirees, Auxiliarists, and spouses reached out to help. CGMA Representatives across the country worked quickly to ensure every eligible civilian received the support they needed.
“As we emerge from this challenging period, our collective response underscores a fundamental truth: the Coast Guard’s enduring strength resides in its people. CGMA’s actions reaffirm our steadfast commitment to safeguarding the well-being and stability of our workforce and to upholding our obligation to care for our own.” RDML Zeta Merchant, Assistant Commandant for Workforce Management and President, CGMA.
As normal operations resume, CGMA wants to ensure a clear understanding of the next steps. You will receive an email notification when shutdown loan repayments begin in December. Repayment will be by allotment and individuals will have three months to complete repayment. If any employee is experiencing continued financial challenges, we encourage you to contact CGMA to discuss available options.
This moment has reinforced what makes the Coast Guard community exceptional: our unity, our resilience, and our shared commitment to Helping Our Own®. CGMA was built for times like these, and we will carry forward the lessons and partnerships strengthened during this shutdown to ensure we remain ready for whatever comes next.
To our civilian workforce — thank you for your patience, dedication, and service.
To our CGMA Representatives — thank you for your compassion and tireless work.
To our Coast Guard family — thank you for standing with one another.
