Celebrating 40 Years of the Coast Guard Ombudsman Program

By CG Workforce Family Services Support

This year, the Coast Guard proudly celebrates the 40th anniversary of its Ombudsman Program, marking four decades of compassionate service and unwavering support for Coast Guard families. Since its establishment in 1986, the program has been an essential pillar of community and a vital link between commands and the families who stand behind our workforce.

For 40 years, dedicated volunteers—spouses, family members, Auxiliarists, active-duty members, and reservists—have selflessly served as trusted liaisons. They ensure that leadership remains connected to the challenges and needs affecting our families, from pay and housing to childcare, crisis response, and disaster preparedness. This consistent and caring communication is fundamental to mission readiness, giving our service members the peace of mind that their loved ones are supported.

“There is no mission readiness without family readiness, and our Ombudsmen are the critical link between the two,” said Adm. Kevin Lunday, Commandant of the Coast Guard.

Each year, March 26th is recognized as Coast Guard Ombudsman Appreciation Day. In this milestone year, commands are encouraged to make a special effort to honor the volunteers who lead this essential work. Units are invited to host recognition events, highlight their Ombudsmen in local communication, or share stories of the profound impact these individuals have had on their communities.

“I am so incredibly proud of our Ombudsmen.  They step up as volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure our families and personnel get connected to the right services when needed,” said Mrs. LyndaLee Lunday. “They support our families and serve as official members of the command team.  They do all of this while balancing their own lives, careers, and families.  I am honored to serve as an Ombudsman at Large and will continue to support and educate our Coast Guard about the benefits of our Ombudsmen.  Thank you to our Ombudsmen, Bravo Zulu, and Semper Paratus.”

Mrs. LyndaLee Lunday and Mrs. Krystal Waldron, the Ombudsman-At-Large team, join the entire Coast Guard leadership in extending their sincere and heartfelt appreciation to every Ombudsman—past and present. Their compassion, dedication, and tireless efforts have shaped this program over four decades, strengthening Coast Guard families and building a more resilient workforce for the challenges of today and tomorrow.
