CGBI is retiring: What you need to know about the switch to Navigator

By Judee Brandt (CG-TECH-31) CGBI support/training program manager

To keep pace with modern operations, the service is retiring Coast Guard Business Intelligence (CGBI) after two decades and moving all your critical readiness and personnel applications to Navigator, our new data visualization platform.

Here’s how that will affect you:

What this means

If you regularly use CGBI, your essential tools aren't disappearing, they’re getting an upgrade. Navigator already houses over 30 applications and more than 400 data sets. You can seamlessly access your most-used products right now, including the Employee Summary Sheet (ESS)Electronic Personnel Allowance List (ePAL)My Readiness, Unit Readiness and Force Composition products.

As older products are decommissioned in CGBI over the coming months, any old links you have saved will direct you to similar products in Navigator that meet your needs. Applications are being added using an agile, incremental approach, meaning new products will be released as soon as they are tested and ready.

A new approach to security and access

The biggest change you’ll notice is how you access information. Unlike CGBI’s open platform, Navigator uses permission-based access controls.

This is a critical upgrade designed to safeguard sensitive information, minimize potential insider threats, and prevent unauthorized users from accessing data without a valid need-to-know. As a result, you may need to formally request access to certain data sets or dashboards that you previously viewed freely in CGBI.

What you need to do today

To ensure a smooth transition and avoid interruptions to your work, take the following steps:

  1. Check the app list: Review the list of available applications  to locate your necessary tools. There, you will also find instructions on how to request access to permission-based products under the “General Information” tab.

  1. Customize your dashboard: Log into Navigator to set up your workspace. You can pin your favorite applications and sign up to receive direct notifications when products are updated or added.

  1. Level up your skills: Navigator isn't just for viewing data; it's for building solutions. Power users can learn to build custom applications with Coast Guard data to automate manual processes and create custom reports for your unit.
