Training Center Birmingham-Southern (TCB-S) is a significant investment in our people and our readiness for the complex maritime challenges of tomorrow.
This move, along with the major recapitalization of Training Center Cape May, represents some of the largest investments ever in Coast Guard infrastructure and answers the Commandant’s call to Ready, Fight, Navigate and rebuilds our training capacity to ensure the Coast Guard remains Always Ready.
What Stays the Same?
Our core accession pipelines remain strong.
Our major training centers are the core of enlisted A and C school training. With the acquisition of TCB-S, these institutions will have an opportunity to strengthen their focused mission areas – TCB-S creates that opportunity for the entire enterprise.
Building a Center of Excellence
So, what is the vision for TCBS? Think of it as a stateoftheart hub for leadership development, A-Schools and advanced training. Today, our Leadership Development Center operates as a tenant across three separate training centers, soon, it will have its own dedicated facility and infrastructure designed exclusively to support and elevate leadership training
Starting in the fall of 2027, the Leadership Development Center (LDC) will begin its relocation to Birmingham, becoming a cornerstone of the new training center. In a move that will create a powerful developmental environment, the Chief Petty Officers Academy (CPOA) will relocate from Training Center Petaluma to TCB-S.
This co-location will establish an Enlisted Leadership Center of Excellence, placing our senior enlisted leaders alongside the next generation of Coast Guardsmen and future "A" School students. This directly supports the Commandant's strategic priority to refocus leadership training on readiness, mission command, and disciplined initiative. Still part of the LDC, Officer Candidate School will remain in New London, co-located with the Coast Guard Academy.
More Than a New Campus
TCB-S is a strategic investment in YOU. By expanding our training infrastructure, we are creating more opportunities for every member to develop their skills and advance their careers. In the future, TCB-S is slated to become the home for "A" and "C" schools, Force Readiness Command Headquarters, a major conference hub, and much more.
This growth at TCB-S will also alleviate the strain on our other valued training centers, like Yorktown and Petaluma, allowing the entire training system to increase throughput and quality.
What’s Next?
Over the next year, the deliberate work of transforming the Birmingham campus into a modern Coast Guard training facility will begin. This includes adapting classrooms, dormitories, and other spaces to meet our standards and running a pilot course to ensure we are ready to deliver world-class instruction.
This is the next chapter in our proud history of adapting and evolving to meet the nation's needs. Service readiness begins with your readiness, and TCB-S is being built to ensure you are equipped, developed, and inspired for the missions ahead.
