The wait is almost over. On Tuesday afternoon, during a momentous closing bell ceremony at the Nasdaq MarketSite Studio in Times Square, the Coast Guard announced that the highly anticipated National Coast Guard Museum in New London, Connecticut, will officially open its doors to the public on August 4, 2027.
Vice Commandant ADM Allan shared the historic news while representing the service to ring the Nasdaq closing bell. He was accompanied at the podium by Mr. Gordy Brunch, representing generations of Coast Guard veterans whose stories of sacrifice and service will be permanently preserved in the state-of-the-art facility.
The announcement was full of historical significance. Admiral Allan pointed out that New York is the very birthplace of the Service.
"New York is our birthplace," Admiral Allan said during the ceremony. "In this city, on August 4th, 1790, Alexander Hamilton and the First Congress created the Coast Guard. That is 236 years of saving lives, securing our borders, keeping our maritime economy moving, and responding to crises."
This upcoming birthday is particularly special as the nation gears up for its semi-quincentennial.
"This birthday is extra special because we’re sharing the spotlight with America’s 250th," ADM Allan noted, highlighting the tireless work of the Coast Guard workforce. "While Americans celebrate this summer, our crews are working hard. They patrolled the Sail 250 regattas and secured World Cup matches. Every day, the Coast Guard protects Americans across our homeland and in distant areas."
For over two centuries, the Coast Guard has been the only United States armed service without a dedicated national museum to honor its legacy. Come August 4, 2027 – a date chosen to align with the Coast Guard's 237th birthday – that will finally change.
“The Coast Guard has always stood as a military service and a vital instrument of national power,” said Commandant, ADM Kevin Lunday. “This museum is a permanent tribute to the Long Blue Line – the generations of crews who have saved lives, defended our borders and maritime approaches, facilitated vital commerce, and responded to crises with little or no warning.”
When it opens on the waterfront in New London, the museum will feature interactive exhibits, historic artifacts (including the iconic Barque Eagle nearby), and immersive galleries covering the Coast Guard’s evolution from its Revenue Cutter days to its modern-day roles in search and rescue, environmental protection, and national security.

As the countdown to August 4, 2027, begins, the museum project team will continue to finalize the interior exhibits, install historical artifacts, and prepare for a historic grand opening week.
