That’s why the Coast Guard is calling on all Active Duty, Reserve, Civilian, and Auxiliary members to promote the National Recreational Boating Safety Survey (NRBSS) to boaters before the January 2027 deadline.

Why this survey matters
How do we know that nearly 100 million Americans hit the water every year? We don't guess. We use the NRBSS.
Run by CG-BSX, this nationwide survey helps provide a clear picture of what's really happening out there. It tracks how many hours people spend on the water, what safety gear they’re using, and even estimates how many kayaks and paddleboards are in the mix.
By comparing these real hours on the water against our accident statistics, we can pinpoint actual risks and build safety programs that work to save lives.
What you can do
Whether you're at a busy small boat station, serving on a tender, or living inland as a Reservist or Auxiliarist—you have a direct role to play. As noted in ALCOAST 197/26 and ALAUX 016/26, our entire workforce is cleared to help spread the word.
