Beginning Sept. 28, the Coast Guard will start using Microsoft 365 Sensitivity Labels to help protect files and ensure information is shared only with authorized recipients.
The new labels are part of the Coast Guard’s Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) program and broader Department of War (DoW) cybersecurity efforts. They will add automated safeguards to files created and stored in Microsoft 365 applications.
Until then, members can review and practice using the new label options in the Sensitivity menu in Microsoft 365 applications. During this familiarization period, labels will not yet be automatically applied.
On Sept. 28, Microsoft 365 will automatically apply the “Uncontrolled Secured (Internal Only)” label to existing and newly created files. This default label limits access to Coast Guard CGOne account holders.
If you need to share files with authorized recipients outside the Coast Guard, you must review and select the appropriate sensitivity label before sharing. An incorrect or overly restrictive label may prevent recipients from accessing a file.
All members should familiarize themselves with label definitions and sharing guidance before the Sept. 28 implementation date.
