Operation Innovation: Hack the Future offers collaboration space for data projects

By Shana Brouder, MyCG Writer

Hack the Future — the Coast Guard’s latest collaborative marketplace — invites all workforce members, including active duty, reservists, auxiliarists, and civilians, to collaborate in real time on data-related projects meant to bolster the Coast Guard’s organizational performance.

A subsection of the Coast Guard’s crowdsourcing platform, CG_Ideas@Work, the Hack the Future (HTF) marketplace provides a distinct platform where individuals with programming experience, data analytics knowledge or an interest in information technology can leverage their education and skill sets in conversations specifically around data analysis and data utilization.

Like a conventional marketplace, members can “shop” — in the sense of shopping for ideas that fit your needs. You can also “shop” for help or expertise about a certain topic.

Specifically, the HTF marketplace is comprised of three distinct, but interrelated, components:

Discuss Ideas for Data Projects – In this section, individuals can post new project recommendations and brainstorm concepts with fellow innovators.

Data Projects – In this section, people can collaborate on and support existing data projects.

Over the Horizon: Graduate Areas of Study – In this section, individuals can share ideas and insights on the Coast Guard’s long-term challenges (data-related or otherwise) with graduate students who can research suggested topics to help the Coast Guard better understand the nature and extent of those challenges (e.g., emerging trends and/or technologies, geopolitical factors).

Because the HTF marketplace is a subsection of CG_Ideas@Work, those interested in participating must have an active CG_Ideas@Work account. If you do not already have an account, you can create one here utilizing your ".mil" or “aux.net” email account.

You can also access CG_Ideas@Work and the HTF marketplace using Pixel Dashboard. Simply click on the CG Innovation Icon under the “Links” section.

The HTF marketplace is a step toward realizing the Coast Guard’s Data Strategy (CAC- enabled) goal of creating a data-based and decision-making environment throughout the enterprise. By employing data-driven methodologies, the Coast Guard can optimize operations, making sure we’re on-scene, on time, every time.

Get started shaping tomorrow’s Coast Guard today by connecting with others and supporting specific initiatives. Still have questions? Email HacktheFuture@uscg.mil for more information.
