Opportunity: Become a personal coach through this free federal program

Once a year, the federal government solicits applicants for a personal coach training program. March 20 is the deadline to apply for the next eight-month program. 

Coaching is an experiential development process that facilitates change and growth in both individuals and groups. The federal government uses coaching to help employees reach professional and business-related challenges. You can learn more about coaching on the Federal Coaching Network’s website

The Federal Internal Coach Training Program (FICTP) offers a unique opportunity for federal employees to become personal coaches. The program is free for all participants. 

Eligibility:

Federal employees who are a GS-12 or higher, full-time, permanent, and have been with DHS for at least one year are eligible to apply. Employees must have achieved at least a “Meets Expectations” or equivalent on their last review and be in good standing. Military members O-3 and above are also eligible. 

The expectation is that graduates of this program will coach other federal employees and help transform leadership across the government. Please find the 2023-2024 FICTP Application here. Applications must be submitted to Alyssa Lombardi no later than close of business March 20. 

Duration: This eight-month program will be offered 100% virtually via Microsoft Teams. Participants must attend orientation and all training segments (11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time): 

  • Orientation: April 26, 2023 
  • May 4-5, and 8- 10, 2023 
  • June 7-8, 2023 
  • July 19-20, 2023 
  • August 23-24, 2023 
  • September 13-14, 2023 
  • October 11-12, 2023 
  • November 14-15, 2023 
  • December 12-13, 2023 
  • Graduation: January 31, 2024 

Participants must also: 

  • Coach four individuals, for a minimum of six hours each 
  • Participate in two mentor coaching sessions each month (part of virtual segments) 
  • Receive at least six hours of coaching 
  • Complete at least five observed coaching sessions; three will be recorded 
  • Write a Reflection Paper of learning and observations 
  • Complete all other course requirements
