Coast Guard team competes in Aerospace Maintenance Competition

By Master Chief Michael Ethridge, the Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) Rating Force Master Chief (RFMC)

The Coast Guard Aeronautical Engineering Team competed at the Aerospace Maintenance Competition in April and pulled in an eighth-place finish among all military teams and 48th out of all teams!

The Aerospace Maintenance Competition was started in 2011 and continues to this day as an international event that showcases aircraft maintenance talents and the common bond of keeping aircraft flying safe.

Teams of five members compete in maintenance events intended to test skill and knowledge required of an aviation maintenance technician.

Aircraft maintainers representing your Coast Guard were:

  • AETC Jonathan Harper from AIRSTA Cape Cod
  • AMTC Jonathon Ruelle from AIRSTA Mobile
  • AET1 Michael Wallace from AIRSTA Clearwater
  • AMT1 Zachary Manning from AIRSTA Atlantic City
  • AMT1 Matthew Turcotte from AIRSTA Cape Cod

AMT1 Turcotte was the first Aviation Reservist to compete for the Coast Guard team. Members were selected upon being nominated for the Oliver Berry Maintenance Award by their respective unit. Additionally, the current Enlisted Ancient Albatross, AMTCM Mark Leichenauer, provided some great mentorship and exceptional motivation!

The Coast Guard Team did great, especially since most other teams practice together for months in preparation for the competition or try-out to represent their aircraft maintenance school’s team. Some of our team hadn’t worked with or met each other until the day before the competition and still rocked it!

If you know them, please give them some well-earned congratulations for representing the Coast Guard well!

This year’s competition consisted of 90 teams from military, commercial, aircraft maintenance schools, general aviation, and space industries. There were a record number of women participants this year which included six all-female teams and the first ever all-female military team.
