Coast Guard updates boatcrew physical fitness test

By Zach Shapiro, MyCG Writer

The Coast Guard has updated its fitness standards for the Boat Crew Physical Fitness Test (PFT) to reflect the Service’s evolving operational environment.

The Office of Boat Forces (CG-731) used an Operational Assessment (OA) with select Coast Guard members and units to test the new standards. Starting July 1, 2025, boat crew members and boarding team members/boarding officers (BTM/BOs) must perform and pass the updated PFT. The new requirements also apply to any Coast Guard member using the Boat Crew PFT as the basis of their fitness tests, including new recruits entering boot camp at Training Center (TRACEN Cape May).

The new PFT includes three key changes:

  • The standard 1.5 mile run time has been adjusted to accurately reflect the fitness demands missions place on boat crew members. The treadmill option is unaffected.

  • Members may complete a 2000-meter row or a 12-minute swim instead of the 1.5 mile run if they choose.

  • Forearm planks will replace sit-ups.

These changes align with the practices of the U.S. Navy, which introduced rowing and planks to their assessments in 2019.

Commanding Officers (COs) and Officers in Charge (OICs) utilizing the boat crew PFT may update their training and must inform their crews of the new PFT.

For more information on the PFT, please see ALCOAST 207/25. For specific standards by exercise and age group, please see the PFT Guide
