The Coast Guard is constantly evolving, and so are the infrastructure needs that support our vital missions. Earlier this month, the Coast Guard commissioned the Nemetz Family Housing Kodiak, Alaska. That’s just one of many projects happening on the shore infrastructure front. Get ready for an inside look at the work of Facilities Design and Construction Center (FDCC) to build a better Coast Guard, one brick at a time.
FDCC is the Coast Guard’s primary command dedicated to designing and constructing new shore infrastructure capital improvement projects. FDCC is a field command in the CG Shore PEO. New buildings, new piers, new boat ramps—that’s these FDCC folks. We’re talking price tags with multiple zeros…and complex planning, design, contracting environmental, permitting, inspection, testing, commissioning processes involved to take a project from budget approval to ready for occupancy. And, they’re busy! There are currently over 20 major construction projects in progress, and over 10 more major projects getting close to mobilization or contract award.
Check out the FDCC semi-annual newsletter for details and photos, and here are some of the highlights:

The FDCC also gets excess real property off the Coast Guard books. They recently sold extra housing in Jonesport, Maine. The property included nine single family homes on 10 acres. Jonesport was a critical housing site for Coast Guard families for nearly 50 years, until it was recently replaced with new family housing constructed by FDCC. The site was auctioned off for $1,175,000, and proceeds from the sale will be retained for future family and unaccompanied personnel housing projects.
The Coast Guard is building! Stay tuned to MyCG for more about the efforts underway to make your workplaces and homes safer and more comfortable.
