Calling all riders: Coast Guard seeks motorcycle mentors

By Erich Biswell, Motor Vehicle Safety Program Manager

The U.S. Coast Guard is seeking experienced motorcyclists to volunteer for its Motorcycle Rider Mentor Program (MRMP), a free program designed to promote safe riding habits.

The program pairs seasoned riders with new or less experienced members to teach motorcycle safety, regulations and techniques. Created by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, the MRMP provides a structured curriculum of 52 topics to guide conversations and share knowledge. The program is free for all participants.

To become a mentor, applicants must have at least 10 years of riding experience. While primary consideration is given to seniority and riding proficiency, members E-6 and above are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants at the E-5 level will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The goal is to create a supportive relationship where experienced riders can share their skills and help others build and maintain safe habits on the road. The program encourages organized group rides and follows established guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety.

If you are interested, please complete the Motorcycle Rider Mentor Application (CAC required). Return the application to Erich Biswell, Motor Vehicle Safety Program manager.
