The Force Design People Table has released a new video highlighting several major initiatives underway as part of Force Design — all centered on investing in the Coast Guard’s most important asset: YOU!

In the video, RADM Chuck Fosse, Deputy Commandant for Personnel, and CMC Malia Chasteen outline how the People Table is driving changes designed to improve the day-to-day experience of Coast Guard members. “We’re working to get you the tools, training, and equipment you need to succeed,” RADM Fosse says.

Modernizing Enlisted Advancement

One of the biggest updates is the modernization of the enlisted advancement system. The Deputy Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard, Master Chief Matt Buckman, explains that the Service is shifting toward a model that better recognizes skills, competencies, and high performance. These updates give members clearer pathways to advancement and greater opportunities to grow into leadership roles. “You make the service what it is,” he notes. “Our system should reflect that.”

Expanding Our Training Footprint

CMC Chasteen also highlighted the recent purchase of Training Center Birmingham-Southern. “I’m sure you’ve heard that we’re growing the workforce by 15,000 service members,” CMC Chasteen said. “So, to train them and future generations of our service members, we’ve acquired a new training center in Birmingham, Alabama, which will serve as the Coast Guard’s Enlisted Leadership Center of Excellence.” While Birmingham-Southern shapes the future leaders of this expanded force, Training Center Cape May will continue to serve as the Birthplace of the Enlisted Workforce—backed by a historic investment of over $400 million in facility improvements to build capacity. We will continue to operate the other existing USCG training centers which will expand capacity of their A and C schools.

Improved Access to Healthcare

The video also highlights ongoing work to expand telehealth access — a top priority for improving quality of life, especially for members underway or serving in remote locations. Telehealth isn’t the whole solution, but it is a major step toward reducing delays in treatment and supporting overall wellbeing.

And Much More

Other initiatives featured in the update include the physical readiness program, reservist readiness efforts, and work with the Technology Table to improve access to HRIT tools through the Digital Sea Bag.
