The Coast Guard has authorized a new Cyberspace Qualification Insignia for the Coast Guard Cyberspace Workforce. Metal versions of the insignia are expected to be available for purchase by the end of October 2026.
Why the new insignia is being added
The insignia formally recognizes the technical expertise and operational contributions of approximately 4,000 active duty, reserve, and civilian personnel in the Coast Guard Cyberspace Workforce. It acknowledges professional proficiency across four critical areas: Cyber Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Cyber Effects, and Cyber Intelligence.
In introducing the new insignia at the CGCYBER Change of Command on last Thursday (Aug. 27) , CGCYBER Commander Rear Adm. Jason Tama, noted highlighting these specialized skills is a vital part of modern service readiness. “Cyberspace is an operational domain, and our cyber workforce is essential to Coast Guard readiness and mission success,” Tama said. “This insignia not only recognizes what our cyber professionals have accomplished, it affirms cyber expertise as a valued operational specialty and a critical part of the Coast Guard’s future.”
In addition to serving as a milestone of professional achievement, the credential is intended to support the recruiting, professionalization, and retention of top-tier cyber talent. Capt. Vince Z. Taylor emphasized that the program is focused on preparing the service for long-term strategic challenges. “The future of the Coast Guard will be shaped by those who understand how to harness technology to create advantage,” Taylor said. “This insignia honors those who have mastered cyberspace and are leading us toward the future.”
What does it look like?
The new insignia was designed by an Integrated Planning Team consisting of members from across the cyber community.
It incorporates several symbols to represent the multi-faceted nature of the Coast Guard’s digital domain operations.
At its center, a shield represents the Coast Guard and its steadfast commitment to defense and security. Embedded within the insignia is a cyber security key featuring three interlocking circles that symbolize the critical relationship between information systems, telecommunications, and architecture. This design represents both literal locking and unlocking capabilities and the power of knowledge. Dynamic lightning bolts extend across the design, conveying speed, operational power, inherent threat, and electric communications across digital networks. Supporting these operational features are circuit nodes and traces, signifying rapid technological advancement and modern digital connectivity, while an integrated compass rose points toward the cardinal directions to symbolize strategic guidance and direction in all operations.
How to earn the insignia
The Cyberspace Insignia is open to active duty and reserve commissioned officers, chief warrant officers, enlisted members (E-4 and above), and Coast Guard civilian employees serving in designated cyber-coded billets.
It can be awarded on a temporary or permanent basis, depending on the member’s service component and qualification milestones. Temporary entitlement is only authorized for Active Duty and Reserve personnel while they are actively assigned to a Defense Cyber Workforce Framework (DCWF)-coded billet.
