The Long Blue Line: Last of the Coast Guard fishing fleet— Hurricane San Calixto and the loss of EM Dow

During World War I and World War II, the Menhaden fishing fleet became a ready reserve for the Navy and Coast Guard.

The crew of the Coast Guard Joseph Tezanos offloads nearly $15 million in cocaine and transfers custody of two suspected smugglers at Coast Guard Base San Juan July 12, 2021. Cutter Joseph Tezanos, with the assistance of a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Air and Marine Operations (AMO) Multi-Role Enforcement Aircraft (MEA) aircraft, interdicted a go-fast vessel in Mona Passage waters July 10, 2021, which resulted in the apprehension of the smugglers and seizure of 502 kilograms of cocaine. The interdiction resulted from multi-agency efforts in support of U.S. Southern Command's enhanced counter-narcotics operations in the Western Hemisphere and coordination with the Caribbean Corridor Strike Force (CCSF). Coast Guard members and civilian boat crews are working to boom off inlets to these areas in order to prevent contamination of one of the Gulf Coast's most sensitive ecosystems.

The Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council has announced $302 million in funding to address ecosystem needs across throughout the Gulf of Mexico

The funding decision supports restoration activities spanning the Gulf Coast states impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill

Ensign Kathleen Spotz, stationed at Sector Northern New England in South Portland, Maine, was named the 2020 Coast Guard Female Athlete of the year in recognition of her superior performance as a runner. Recently, Spotz ran across the entire state of Maine in just over 30 hours—becoming the first person ever to do so!

The Coast Guard is scheduled to make major changes to waterways, and Seventh District crews rescue diver in distress in U.S. Virgin Islands

James Price received his Doctor of Philosophy in Earth Sciences (2020) from Ohio State University. He studied the microbial communities and trophic strategies of Hawaiian corals in the context of a changing climate. He also earned a Master of Science in Biology from Purdue University – Fort Wayne and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Georgia Southern University. Price grew up in Suwanee, Georgia.

The Long Blue Line: Coast Guard Combat Operations in World War I

World War I served as a baptism of fire for the Coast Guard. During the war, the Coast Guard performed its traditional missions of search and rescue, maritime interdiction, law enforcement, humanitarian response, and port security.
