Deckplate Leader of the Week: Army Sergeant 1st Class Stephen Tyliszczak

Our Deckplate leader of the week is Army Sergeant 1st Class Stephen Tyliszczak, our Army National Guard brother currently assigned to the Intel Division at U.S. Coast Guard Sector Long Island.

Our deckplate leader of the week is Chief Petty Officer Ryan Romesberg, a damage controlman from the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Stone!

Romesberg’s leadership is remarkable as he tackles being the damage controlman chief aboard the cutter and the command fire marshal.

He has worked vigorous hours to complete repair party inventories prior to the Coast Guard accepting the new cutter.

He goes above and beyond to be an active leader in the chief’s mess. He coordinated a barbecue for phase one cutter personnel in Pascagoula, Mississippi to keep moral high.

Romesberg ensures he is always available to mentor, develop, and assist junior personnel.

He recently created a damage control plan to assist in qualifying multiple members for initial duty sections.

When asked what makes a good chief?

“A good chief is a chief that doesn't ask their members to perform tasks they wouldn't be comfortable doing themselves. Lead from the front. Not a ‘do as I say’ type of leader.”

What advice do you have for junior members?

“Don't rush to get out of your first unit as a non-rate. If you really want to go a specific rating with a long school list, it is worth the wait. Set goals early and often.”

Deckplate Leader of the Week: Chief Petty Officer Ryan Romesberg

Our deckplate leader of the week is Chief Petty Officer Ryan Romesberg, a damage controlman from the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Stone!

Our Deckplate Leader of the Week is Chief Petty Officer Felix Castillo Jr., a boatswain’s mate stationed at U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Juan!

Castillo personifies what it means to be a chief and a leader in today's workforce. He is a mentor, role model and leader – not just at the sector, but as an honorable member of the Chief's Mess, across Sector San Juan, and in the Hispanic community at large.

He has not only succeeded at being a respected mentor to Puerto Rico's junior enlisted personnel, but also having a boxing coach mentality in raising his younger brother Senior Chief Petty Officer Afip "Tito" Castillo, a machinery technician, as another respected Coast Guard leader!

When asked what make a good chief? - he responded:

“A good chief is humble and accountable in all his actions; setting the example for others to follow, knowing a positive outcome will be produced by being the chief who executes those actions consistently with pride.”

Advice to Junior Members:

“To always be ready to know the job below and above you, because you never know when someone will need your help or to fill in a new position. Also, learn the importance of diversity and inclusion throughout our service today, and finding a way to involve it in your local community outreach.”
