Coast Guard Announces Outlook to Combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing

Do you know how the seafood you eat is caught? It’s possible the fish you buy came from an illegal fishing haul. It’s estimated that one in five fish in an industry with a sales value of over $400 billion are brought to market through unlawful methods. Fishing communities subject to the standards that promote good governance of resources are disadvantaged when illegally caught fish enter the market.   

The Commandant has announced a plan to combat the multi-billion dollar international black market in fishing, pursuing new efforts and international partnerships to combat economically and environmentally unsustainable fishing practices.

Coast Guard approves new initiatives to recruit and retain members

The Coast Guard just announced monetary and non-monetary incentives designed to recruit and retain skilled members in the Coast Guard’s most mission-critical areas. The announcements cover officers and enlisted members and will be implemented in fiscal year 2021 (FY21).

The new military health system’s MHS GENESIS will enable the Service to transition from paper records to a state-of-the-art system with an impressive array of benefits for both patients and health-care providers.

Wading Into Flooded Waters – New Flood Response Training Finishes Its Inaugural Course

In August 72 Coast Guardsmen participated in the Service’s inaugural flood response training in Beltsville, IN. These members received this training because of the likelihood that they will be called on to respond to a flood within the community they serve.

As fiscal year 2020 draws to a close, the Research, Development, Test & Evaluation (RDT&E) and Innovation Program is already looking to the future. The RDT&E and Innovation Program is asking you – all military, civilian, reserve, auxiliary and contract personnel – to submit research ideas for the FY22 RDT&E Project Portfolio. Aerial Heroism: The 2020 Aviation Award Winners

The Coast Guard is widlely known for its daring and heroic rescues at sea. Some of those most daring rescues occur from the Service’s premier aviation search and rescue (SAR) capabilities.
This year, the Sector Humboldt Bay crew of Coast Guard rescue helicopter 6561 risked their lives to rescue two critically injured firefighters from a clearing, while flames engulfed nearby trees. Without the aircrew’s creativity and tenacity, it is likely these two men would not have survived the fire.
