The Long Blue line: “Lucky Ox”—surviving the killing fields of D-Day

Operation “Overlord” led to the defeat of Nazi Germany and end of the Second World War in Europe. "Lucky Ox" being one of the Coast Guard heroes of the operation.

A team from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy participated in the National Security Agency’s 20th annual National Cyber Exercise (NCX), a three-day cyber competition that tests the offensive and defensive cybersecurity skills virtually, April 8-10, 2021. The Coast Guard Academy recently instituted a Cyber Systems degree to meet the needs of the services cyber security strategy of defending cyber space, enabling operations, and protecting infrastructure. Charles Moulthrope and Robert Goldman are en route to their new homeport in Bahrain in support of the Navy’s U.S. Fifth Fleet and U.S. Coast Guard Patrol Forces Southwest Asia. A major step forward was taken in replacing the service’s aging river buoy and inland construction tenders; Congratulations to all members and civilian employees on their accomplishments!

James Price received his Doctor of Philosophy in Earth Sciences (2020) from Ohio State University. He studied the microbial communities and trophic strategies of Hawaiian corals in the context of a changing climate. He also earned a Master of Science in Biology from Purdue University – Fort Wayne and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Georgia Southern University. Price grew up in Suwanee, Georgia.

Prestigious marine policy Sea Grant Knauss fellowships join the Coast Guard   

Coast Guard’s response directorate receives placements after lengthy hiatus from the fellowship program 

Lanthier is an inspirational leader to members of all ranks. Throughout the global pandemic, he remained a trusted mentor who consistently sought out and excelled at the most challenging of assignments. Recognizing a need to assist the unit’s medical clinic that serves over 30 units across the Gulf Coast, he quickly volunteered to not only serve as a contract tracer, but alternate between the clinic chief to provide daily updates to the command on members in isolation/quarantine and any anticipated impact to the unit. As a qualified tracer, he remained an expert on the changing Coast Guard and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) policies, serving as a subject matter expert to the command. Furthermore, Lanthier excelled as the acting command master chief on multiple occasions at the Coast Guard’s only combined training center, operational air station, and base. Lastly, he established new programs to assist unit families.

First Class Cadet Josiah Davis, a native of Saline, Michigan, has been awarded one year of graduate school at Florida A&M to complete at the NCAA Division I level for track and field before reporting to his five-year military commitment for the U.S. Coast Guard. Davis is a three-time All-American for the Coast Guard Academy and national champion in the distance medley relay at Saline High School and a two-time national qualifier in the 400 hurdles.
