The Coast Guard Academy breaks ground on a new, modern building

The Respect and Inclusion Summer Experience, or RISE, is an Academy program aimed at making sure incoming cadets start their Coast Guard career on the right foot. RISE kicks off days before the official start of Swab Summer, giving future swabs and their families time to meet other swabs, become familiar with the Academy grounds, and to see the area surrounding the campus. The Respect and Inclusion Summer Experience is an Academy program aimed at making sure all cadets start their Coast Guard career on the right foot.

Cmdr. Merle J. Smith, Jr. was the second African American to receive an appointment to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the first to graduate. Smith served as a role model for countless cadets, faculty, and staff at the Coast Guard Academy.
