Rear Adm. Dana Thomas is the Director of Health, Safety and Work-Life for the U.S. Coast Guard.

Thomas is responsible for the Coast Guard's health care system of 41 clinics and 150 sick bays, as well as operational and off-duty mishap prevention, response and investigation. She oversees the Coast Guard's Child Development Services, Culinary Services ashore and afloat, Substance Abuse, Health Promotion and Sexual Assault Prevention, Response and Recovery programs.

Coast Guard Cutter James wins the Excellence in Safety Award: The Coast Guard Commandant, Adm. Karl Schultz, presented the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter James, a National Security Cutter, the Excellence in Safety Award March 18, 2021. The crew of the James was honored for its quick and innovative thinking during a counter-drug patrol. During the 74 days underway, the crew devised and implemented extensive operational and personal protective procedures to keep everyone free from infection and maintain its full mission effectiveness, despite interdicting three detainees that tested positive for COVID-19. A team from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy participated in the National Security Agency’s 20th annual National Cyber Exercise (NCX), a three-day cyber competition that tests the offensive and defensive cybersecurity skills virtually, April 8-10, 2021. The Coast Guard Academy recently instituted a Cyber Systems degree to meet the needs of the services cyber security strategy of defending cyber space, enabling operations, and protecting infrastructure.
