Best Places to Work: Station Miami Beach

By Lt. Matt Ross, Commanding Officer, Station Miami Beach

My unit is the best place to work because: The crew here is phenomenal and makes working here so special. We have an extremely high operational tempo with challenging and unique cases every day.

What we do: Search and rescue, alien migrant and drug interdiction, interagency maritime law enforcement operations, cruise ship escorts, recreational boating safety, illegal charter operations, tours and visits, community engagement, and living marine resources enforcement.

Why it's fulfilling: The crew, the mission, and the experience gained here. When you step on duty here, anything can happen; any given day here can be a day full of search and rescue (SAR) and law enforcement (LE) cases. Every member is an essential part of the team, and we use the training we do in real cases all the time.

What we do for fun: Our unit does weekly workouts together and we host swim calls at the station, swimming with all sorts of marine life. We play basketball between the sections and participate in a fantasy football league together.

When not on watch, we: Decompress with video games, ping pong, cooking, fishing, swimming, and working out.

Why it’s great to live here: Miami Beach is beautiful, there is plenty to do year around. The weather is great, the beaches are fantastic, we have lots of sports and events, and there are a ton of different cultures to experience here. There is always something to do in Miami in our off time. Whatever your interests are, Miami has it—except for cross-country skiing!
